Defending series champion Stone gets first 2009 win

The Street Stocks came out for their 20-lap main event with John Puglisi taking the lead from his pole starting spot. Steve Barrett settled into second while the field behind the lead duo intensely battled for position. Puglisi dropped off the pace on lap 5, retiring from the event and handing the lead to Barrett.
Stone began to make his presence felt, coming from his sixth starting spot to pressure Barrett by halfway under green flag conditions. Ed Puleo had moved into third with his strongest run of the early season, while Walt Hovey and last week’s winner Ronnie Oldham Jr. battled behind inside the top-five. The field began to tighten up behind Barrett as the laps continued to tick away.
Stone’s opportunity came with 6 laps to go, making an inside move on Barrett and completing the pass for the lead with just 5 laps to go. Puleo would make his way inside Barrett, but would not have time to pressure Stone in an entertaining green-to-checkered race. Walt Hovey rebounded from earlier contact with the aarmco barrier to finish third, Oldham fourth, and Barrett slipped back to fifth after leading several laps in just his third Street Stock start. Barrett is a graduate of the Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday program. |
