Yuhas Wins Waterford Opener
|
|
Ron Yuhas Jr. was an escape artist before a winner in Saturday night's 35-lap SK-Modified feature at Waterford Speedbowl. It was the 55th consecutive opener for the Connecticut shoreline oval.
"We came out muddy but in the lead," said Yuhas, explaining the infield jaunt that enabled him to miss a massive lap-19 fourth-turn crash. He then held on to nip a determined Chris Pasteryak by less than foot at the checkered.
A lap-32 restart set up a classic Yuhas (inside)-Pasteryak (outside) duel that was "hyped" by two restarts being called back. On the third try Yuhas got the jump but they were even heading into one. It stayed that way to the finish.
"I knew I had to get back on the gas as quickly as possible," said Yuhas who gained the slightest of edges out of four heading for the checker. "We almost got it," countered Pasteryak, "another lap maybe, even another foot."
Yuhas was running seventh when, following a restart, at least half of the field, including the top five, wound up in the fourth turn Armco. Rob Janovic, Dennis Charette, Shawn Monahan, Tom Fox and Diego Monahan were all eliminated. An over-anxious Shawn Monahan accepted the blame.
When action resumed, Yuhas built an immediate edge but within seven laps Pasteryak was filling his mirror, looking both high and low. Jeff Pearl survived a series of tire problems to claim third followed by early leader Frank Mucciacciaro and Frank Ruocco, the latter starting 26th. |
